Glentaggart East is a huge new open cast – Scottish Coal plan to mine 4 million tonnes of coal here, less than 1.5km from Douglas and the homes of over 1000 people, over at least 10 years. 4 million tonnes of coal translates to a massive 80 million tonnes of dug up peat, soil and rock, and an incredible estimated 32 million tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
Scottish Coal have the cheek to call this proposal a “satellite extension” to the existing Glentaggart mine, even though they don’t share a metre of site boundary and are distinctly two separate open cast mines.
