An application for a 350,000 tonne opencast coal mine at Varteg Hill in Wales has been rejected after councillors from Torfaen felt that, “Given the site’s proximity to residential properties plus the nature, scale and duration of reclamation, this proposal presented an unacceptable impact on local residents in relation to noise and dust”.

Many local residents and wildlife groups objected to the application, submitted by Glamorgan Power, despite promises of a £315,000 “Neighbourhood Renewal Area Scheme” and a 10 year “landscaping service” once the coal had been extracted. Perhaps the local communities and councillors looked at the examples of such schemes (1) and “restorations” (2) in South Lanarkshire.

Perhaps they valued their children’s health and their local environment enough to stand up to the proposals and challenge the destruction of their lives and land.
