This morning Broken Cross opencast site in the Douglas Valley was blockaded for an hour and a half before Scottish Coal workers lifted three people in heavy concrete lock-ons out of the road, all overseen by Inspector Whip (photographed) of Strathclyde Police. This isn’t the first time that Inspector Whip has hurt people by lifting […]

Yesterday the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organisation, upgraded its classification of diesel engine exhausts as carciongenic to humans, based on sufficient evidence that exposure to them is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer. According to the BBC, it is thought that people working in high-risk industries […]

Significant oversights have been identified in South Lanarkshire Council’s initial planning documents relating to local mineral industries. Coal Action Scotland has carried out a critical examination of the Health Impact Assessment Report commissioned by planners at South Lanarkshire Council, revealing inadequate solutions for significant issues relating to the health and well being of residents in […]

Yesterday, the House of Commons saw a debate on the private members bill to introduce a 500m buffer zone between opencast mines and residents domiciles, proposed by North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen. Despite having the support of over 20 cross-party MPs and the fact that Scottish and Welsh parliaments have already ruled in favor […]

Yesterday marked the final submission date for Scottish Coal to appeal the decision by Midlothian council on the application for an open cast coal mine near Cousland and Ormiston. The unanimous rejection of the mine by councillors in September was in large part due to the massive local opposition to Scottish Coal’s plans. partner

The SNP have today challenged the labour government for delays in paying compensation to miners suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which resulted in over 2,000 Scottish miners dieing before their payments were processed. Throughout the UK almost 18,000 miners died before their compensation was paid because of labour’s legal challenge to the mining […]

An application for a 350,000 tonne opencast coal mine at Varteg Hill in Wales has been rejected after councillors from Torfaen felt that, “Given the site’s proximity to residential properties plus the nature, scale and duration of reclamation, this proposal presented an unacceptable impact on local residents in relation to noise and dust”.

The Start of STOP!

This week saw the public launch of the new community group Stop The Open-cast Plans (STOP!) with two highly anticipated meetings bringing together local opposition to Scottish Coal’s plans for the Douglas and Nathan Valleys. Over 5,000 leaflets were distributed throughout Douglasdale and Lesmahagow and despite poor weather conditions, both meetings brought significant numbers of […]

The Daily Mirror Investigations Team (apologies for the choice of source) have reported on Scottish Coal’s awful record when it comes to the health and safety of its opencast workers, following their £400,000 health and safety fine and more deaths on their sites last year. partner
