After 20 years of struggle against open cast coal mining, a hard-fought battle against Scottish Coal’s plans for Mainshill, the next phase of struggle has started. Scottish Coal, as with mining operators across Scotland and the UK, are expanding operations massively. This part of South Lanarkshire is already one of the most heavily mined places in Europe with 5 operational or unrestored open casts. Not satisfied with the millions already generated, Scottish Coal went after 4 new sites, with 4 new open cast applications and a retail and industrial development all at the same time. Adding insult to injury, South Lanarkshire Council threw legal threats around as fast as Scottish Coal could apply for open casts, beginning court action against Douglas Community Council and Coal Action Scotland.

The application for Glentaggart East and the North Eastern Extension to Broken Cross have now been approved by South Lanarkshire Council. Scottish Coal have confirmed that they’re not going ahead with Auldton Heights – a small victory in the struggle to stop the “Forward Strategy”. Click here for more information. The fight to stop a new mine at Glentaggart East continues…

See the map below for where existing or unrestored open casts are (black) and new open cast applications (red). Click on the links below the map for more information on each project.
